Russians have a long history in Alaska, with some Siberian migrant groups dating back as far as the early 1700s. The first European settlement in Alaska was in Kodiak in 1784 during the Russian fur trade. Eventually, #Russia officially sold #Alaska to the United States in 1867 but many Russians stayed and continued to grow. One notable member of the Russian Orthodox community in Anchorage is professional pianist, Margarita Merkusheva. Since moving to Alaska from Vladivostok 20 years ago, she’s continued to advance her musical career by writing custom music for the Alaska Dance Theatre and giving #piano lessons to dozens of families in the Russian community.

On November 10, 2011, Nobuyuki Tsujii, the blind pianist from Japan who was the winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Gold Medal in 2009 appeared on the stage of Carnegie Hall. His dream had come true. Arguably the most important event in the career of any performer, for “Nobu” it was a miracle. With his brilliant technique and beautiful tone, the performance of the masterpieces of Beethoven, Liszt, Mussorgsky, and encores by Chopin and his own compositions, brought the usually reserved Carnegie Hall audience to its feet.

The Pianist (Genocide)

Piano Learning No Comments »

The Pianist recounts a true story from the Nazi Holocaust that is both horrifying and inspiring. Set inside the walled confines of the Warsaw Ghetto, the film focuses on the struggle of a famous Polish pianist, Wladyslaw Szpilman, to survive after the loss of his entire family to the concentration camps. In spite of the chilling indifference of many to the slaughter of the Jews of Warsaw, Szpilman is ultimately saved by a German Army officer named Wilhelm Hosenfeld. A devout Catholic, Hosenfeld is credited with helping to hide and rescue a number of Polish victims of Nazi atrocities.

Hosenfeld himself was eventually captured by Russian troops and died in a Soviet concentration camp after the war. However, at Szpilman’s urging, he was posthumously honored by Israel as one of the “Righteous Gentiles” who, along with Oskar Schindler and others, refused to ignore the humanity of Holocaust victims.

The film stars Adrien Brody, Thomas Kretschmann, Frank Finlay, Maureen Lipman, Emilia Fox and Michal Zebrowski.

Arthur Tatum Jr. (/ˈteɪtəm/, October 13, 1909 – November 5, 1956) was an American jazz pianist.

Tatum is widely considered one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. His performances were hailed for their technical proficiency and creativity, which set a new standard for jazz piano virtuosity. Critic Scott Yanow wrote, “Tatum’s quick reflexes and boundless imagination kept his improvisations filled with fresh (and sometimes futuristic) ideas that put him way ahead of his contemporaries.”
